product test: pledge orange wipes

My friend Kim knows a thing or two about scents, after working as beauty editor for years, and even studying with a “nose.” So when she recommends a product because she loves the way it smells, I’m inclined to listen. Her latest tip wasn’t a bath oil or room spray, but a cleaning product. “I love Pledge wipes,” she said. “But you have to get the ones with orange oil.” Indeed, these handy Swiffer-like wet ones do smell refreshing, and polished up our stainless steel countertops, vintage sideboard and cheapie Ikea LACK tables with equal grace. I even gave the hardwood floors a swipe with it. They looked and smelled lovely afterwards, but are now super slippery. The verdict: Wipe and whiff away, but stick to furniture! Available at drugstore.com for $2.63. — Angela M.

I love the smell of Pledge orange cloths too but yours must have a different recipe to Australian ones as I use mine all the time on my Swiffer for sweeping my (wooden) stair with never a slip…

Don’t waste your money on these type of products that add more waste to our landfills.

Pledge in all its ramifications isn’t good for wood. It’s loaded with silicon so it should only be used rarely, if at all.

Works great on leather couches.
