My mother does not like my style, which is sort of... a little bit scandanavian/midcenturymodern, bright punchy colors, pale woods, white (and the occasional spot of black) the only neutrals. It's a clear and happy color scheme. There was a finalist in the Color contest on Apartment Therapy who had a similar style, but other than that, I rarely see it. (It's a slightly arcane take on the more designy/mod/tech side of Ikea stuff, too.) I don't really know that she has *any* personal decorative style... if she does, it's very mainstream/traditional and casual. I think she likes Mission/Arts&Crafts, but not to the extent of William Morris textiles.

The thing she hates most is probably my red flokati rug. This is ironic, as it was a present from her.

(& like Bunny, I love my futon! I don't love my futon mattress, though, and since I never fold the thing up anyway, there are no qualms about replacing it with a regular mattress. The platform takes the place of a box spring. Sometimes it can be hard to find queen mattresses that don't automatically come with box springs, though... best to look at discounty places. I have seen them at Meijer, for example. I love the futon for the reasons Bunny mentions - the lowness, the sleekness, etc.)

The last time my parents came to visit was a scant two days after my housewarming party. My oh-so-helpful friends, knowing my parents were on their way, left me a little present: cut-out smut magazine photos EVERYWHERE! Some in plain sight, some not. I thought I had most of them, until my mother decided to use the powder room (the only room not gone over with what I thought was a fine-toothed comb); imagine our surprise to find the headless centerfold taped to the mirror!!

My mom hasn't visited the apartment I'm currently in, but if she were to be coming over, I'd consider removing my collection of kitschy/girly books from the top of my bookshelf: Sex and the Single Girl, The Art of Kissing, The Homicidal Virgin... that sort of thing. And my bedside "supplies" would definitely be put out of sight too!

My step-mom has a dislike/hate relashionship with my poor cats. While one of them is the devil himself I am sure, the other is just a slow, sleepy, pudgy cross-eyed rescue who sleeps 96.3% of the time. She doesn't understand the desire to have a cat, especially when she sees them scratch at the furniture. We have tried everything to get the mean Satan cat to stop, but, well, he is the devil! We actually had to give up on our Conran chaise and just let him destroy it! One day it will be recovered, and the cat will be wearing gloves 24/7, but until the money exists to do that, why waste you time getting angry over a cat, being a cat? Sorry Yv. Just give the cat a break!

My couch. Yes, I know it needs to be recovered, but it's just not a financial priority right now. Sorry, Mom.

The dog and the dishwasher. My Mom refuses to believe me when I tell her our dog is both well behaved and clean in our house. She continues to suggest that perhaps we can build a pen for her outside after we move. We've started to wonder if the reason she keeps begging out of visiting (unusual for her) is because of the dog. As for the dishwasher, while my method is to cram everything - pots and pans and even good knives (I know, I'm awful) - in the dishwasher and run it at the end of the day, both my Mom and MIL insist (as in, they'll do it whether you say OK or not) upon washing dishes by hand after every meal when they visit. Oops, I guess this wasn't supposed to be a venting frustration thing ;)

I can't say that anything I own is particularly unnerving to my mom but, I do know the one thing that always makes her wince, (and that I just can't seem to take care of.) She can't leave the house unless all the beds are made. I can't seem to leave my apartment without my comforter on the floor and my sheets in a ball at the foot of the bed. When I was living under her roof she would often wake me up in the morning for school. I would stumble to the bathroom, half asleep, only to return 45 seconds later to a made bed. I do what I can when she visits but, to my mom a "made bed" isn't just smoothed out; it's tucked and taught and utterly wrinkle free. I'm sure one of these days i'll get it right.

My mom is pretty light-hearted when it comes to home ec, but she does happen to be an orderly woman, with lots of to-do lists and efficient cleaning regimens up her sleeves. That's why I'm sure she wouldn't approve of our closets, which follow a "see no evil" philosophy. Casey and I have a tendency to organize them this way: 1. cram stuff in, 2. shut the door. That is why I will never let my mom near Casey's closet, the worst of the lot. Who knows what might fall on the poor woman’s head?!
