saving space: megan's bed-by-the-window
Sick and tired of sleeping on my grandma’s orthopedic hand-me-down, Casey and I finally decided to splurge on the bed of our dreams. The problem we faced? Where it would fit. A closet takes up one wall; two big windows fill the other two; and the fourth wall has the door. (Hello, Feng Shui dilemma!) We came up with a simple fix: Find a low-slung bed and center it under a window, which naturally heightens a headboard anyway. Armed with a tape measure, we headed to Room & Board, and found what we were looking for: A sleek platform bed in black leather that would fit snugly beneath the sill. The bonus? I’ve ditched my alarm clock in favor of the sun streaming in from above — just what this self-employed girl needs for a gentle wake-up call. — Megan K. Hmm, we tried that for a few weeks… but I live in the miserable UK, and the draft off the window meant we both started waking up with stiff necks. I’d be interested to see if you have the same problem, although of course I hope you don’t!
Actually, I have to agree with Kitty. We put our bed in front of the window and half hated it all winter. It was CHILLY. We covered the windows with insulating plastic and it didn’t help much.
That’s no fun! I’m lucky in that the windows in my bedroom are draft-free. I did read in an old New York Times article that steel casement windows–like those used in many NYC apartments–are often colder and less efficient than the old wooden ones in single-family houses, which is what I have.
Aside from using insulating plastic, Thisoldhouse.com recommends weather stripping, which is more of a “job” but might be worth it:

For a more detailed how-to, check out Ehow.com’s step-by-step. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have photos, but it might be a good way to get started:

Hope this helps!
Where did you get that pillow from? it’s gorgious!!
It’s a Thomas Paul design. Check out http://www.thomaspaul.com! And I purchased it at Gracious Home http://www.gracioushome.com in NYC — pricey, but worth it.
