the bookclub: what should we read next?

book.jpg

Last week we exchanged banter on Shelterrific’s first bookclub read, Manhunt and we were pleased to have a few of you join in. To make the next one even more engaging, we want you to help us chose the book. Here are four that we’re considering, but if there’s another current title that you’re dying to read speak up. We’ll announce the selection by the end of the week, and then give ourselves a month to read. So please, help us decide:
What should we read next? 1400041201.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg or 0393059804.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg or 1400076196.01.__PIst.arrow,TopLeft,-1,-17_SCTHUMBZZZ_.jpg or 061873516X.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg

1400041201.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg 1. Heat: An Amateur’s Adventures as a Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany The title gives you a clear idea of what this new book is about, though it doesn’t tell you the kitchen he worked in was Mario Batali’s. The New Yorker featured an expert a few weeks ago that was laugh out loud funny. This will be a real treat, and we’re not just saying that ’cause we love Italian food. Visit Random House’s site for more info.

0393059804.01.THUMBZZZ.jpg 2. A Death in Belmont We saw Sebastian Junger (Perfect Storm) discussing his new book on the Today show and it sounded fascinating. You see, the man who confessed to the Boston Strangler crimes worked on a construction job in Junger’s childhood home. Though nonfiction, reviews say this one reads like a mystery novel. 1400076196.01.__PIst.arrow,TopLeft,-1,-17_SCTHUMBZZZ_.jpg 3. Saturday by Ian McEwan Just out in paperback, this novel from the author of Atonement is supposed to be masterful. It accounts a single day in a neurosurgeon’s life and touches upon 9/11 and the beginnings of the Iraqi war. Visit the author’s website to read an excerpt.

061873516X.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg4. Philip Roth’s new book, Everyman From the man who is often called America’s greatest living novelist, his just released book is about a Jersey man facing death, old age and his own vanity. Read the slate.com review.

Saturday is an excellent read. I would recommend it to anyone.

i vote for “a death in belmont.” i’ve been jonesing for a mystery lately.

Jennifer

I would love to read Saturday; I also admit that I was reluctant to join last time because of hardback selection. They are just too expensive, and newly-published books are hard to get your hands on at the library.

allison

I vote for Saturday too.

Perhaps my love for the plump Italian in funny, orange shoes is affecting my decision, (not to mention my opinion that Babbo is the best restaurant in New York City) but, I think Heat would be a great read!

Heat for me too

Beth J.

I vote for Heat, I’m on a non-fiction kick! And I loved that story that ran in The New Yorker the other week …

I too lean with Saturday. It’s equally interesting as a novel and as the first (or nearly first) of the 9/11-related fiction efforts.

Angela M.

This is a tough one: I would love to read them all.. but I think I’m in the mood for Heat right now. It will be funny, and I’m long overdue for a trip to Italy. I may as well go in mind, if not body!

Arin

I vote for Heat.

shelterrific » Blog Archive » bookclub: did you vote for the next read?

[...] Tomorrow, we’ll annouce our choice for the next bookclub read. At the moment it seems to be a run off between Heat and Saturday. Can’t decide? Click here to read about the four books we’re considering and to vote for your choice! [...]

Death in Belmont!

Caitlin B.

I also vote for heat, if the voting is still on.
(Lovely site, by the way – I check in on it everyday)

I vote for Heat. I was an English major, but I have never really loved Ian McEwan (she says guiltily). I’ve only read two of his books, but was not impressed. I know, I know–he has a god-like reputation.

If it’s not too late to vote, I say Heat. (Though I haven’t had time to read a book cover to cover since my daughter was born!)
