new obsession: marcel dzama housewares

A few years ago, at the annual Pier Show in NYC, I came across the drawings of Marcel Dzama. A Canadian artist based in Winnipeg, CA, his macabre yet whimsical illustrations of woodland creatures and dark-haired girls really spoke to me; I think it comes from being raised in a cold, gloomy place. Naturally, I couldn’t make an on-the-spot decision (I am a Libra after all) and never got around to buying one of the $500 drawings. Since then, Dzama has become an artworld darling, with celebrities like Jim Carrey, Nicholas Cage and Dave Eggers all owning his work; you may have noticed his cover of the NYTimes magazine a month or so ago. Needless to say this surge in popularity has made his work more valuable, but luckily, I’ve found a little piece of Dzama that’s affordable: ceramic housewares. I picked up these salt & pepper jester shakers last year in Paris, but have noticed them — and others, including sad ghost lamps and melting snowmen canisters — at Unicahome.com. For now they’ll satisfy my craving, as I my hunt for the perfect dark-haired heroine Dzama drawing continues. — Angela M.
