field trip: hd buttercup

We’d been wanting to visit L.A.’s mammouth HD Buttercup ever since we read about its opening a year ago. Built on the site of a old bakery in Culver City, this art deco masterpiece now holds countless furniture and houseware vendors in its skylit, 100,000 square feet. The nice thing is the wide selection of styles on display, from antique Asian to Californian midCentury. Unfortunately for vistors just passing by, like us, there weren’t a lot of small tsotchkes to bring home. We were particularly impressed with the collection of old maps (wouldn’t it be great to hide a flat screen tv behind one?) and restored old phones. Click through to the next page to see the one we’re eyeing.

How cute is this? But in this day-and-age, is it possible to live without a pushbutton? Check them out for yourself at:

It is! I have a rotary phone in my room, and I consider every call an adventure.
it’s not “built” on the site of an old bakery; it actually is an old bakery, renovated for its current use.
This is an excellent post. I wanted to get out there last summer while in LA and totally got wrapped up in Santa Monica and forgot all about it. Don’t you just love CA, Angela? A nice break from NYC, I’m sure. Although, when I got back from LA I felt a bit better in the sense that I didn’t have to be so concerned about my breast size and how far I am from a size zero. I did meet Rachel Ashwell though, and got to see Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson and a slew of other celebs at a red carpet event I attended for Batman Begins. That was a highlight. I remember on the flight home, I turned to my husband and said, “I forgot to go to HD Buttercup, honey!” and he replied, “Yeah, poor thing, you had to suffer through a red carpet event instead…” In my head, I was saying, “Next time I’ll do both!”
