truly affordable art: lumas gallery

Last weekend’s Affordable Art Fair didn’t quite live up to its name: Though the range may have been from $100 to $5,000, it seemed that $4,000 was the average price of work on display. The inspiring exception was Lumas, a Berlin-based gallery that really does make owning art possible. They specialize in limited-edition, hand-signed art photography that includes new artists as well as established ones like Nan Goldin and Martin Parr. Editions usually range from 75 to 100 prints, and the sizes can be quite large. What’s small is the price, starting at around $150 but not getting higher than $700. Some work from their pool is above, left to right: Julia Christie, Julia Kissina and Robert Davies. Visit lumas.com to browse and order.

Sera — Really? At Lumas? Good for you! I’d love hear about your experience… how it arrives, if it meets your expectations. Did you get it framed or mounted or are you going to do that yourself? Stay in touch!

I sprung for a large sized print, mounted. I liked the way the mounted photos looked on the site — very immediate, no dead space. It is a bit daunting to make a decision based on images you see on a website — it is not at all the same as examining a photo and especially the craftsmanship that went into framing/mounting it in a gallery. But I noticed that they have a 30 day money back guarantee, so you can try the art out in your home. So if I truly hate it I can send it back and call the shipping the price of experimenting with online art shopping.
All told I spent a little over 500 bucks, which is a lot for me — to put it in prespective, I just bought a coffee table and a console at west elm, BOTH for under 400. I suppose that shows you where my priorities lie.
The print should arrive in about a month. I’ll stop back by the site and let you know how it looks!

I was just in Barcelona last weekend and found a photography gallery very similar in prices to the one you are talking about. It’s called LA CAMARA LUCIDA (www.lacamaralucida.com ) The gallery is a very nice and confortable place to have a look at the photographs. You should also take a look at this site!
