surf 'n' shop: buggy party goods

The toddler is turning two next month! I’m pretty excited about it, and am currently in planning mode. The budding entymologist is in love with ladybugs, butterflies and dragonflies — so for the first time ever, I’m thinking “theme.”
I dashed over to Pearl River and bought lots of bug goodies — butterfly mobiles, figurines, and accordions! Now, I’m surfing for other accessories. Should I buy the theme paper goods? These “butterfly garden” plates aren’t terrible, and they’re definitely not as horribly offensive as a lot of the kid’s party crap I’ve seen out there. But, I can’t help but wonder if there’s something more/better/unexpected.
My ladybug troubles? Well, most of the “eggy-bug” stuff I’ve found is too cutesy-cutesy or too expensive. (These from plumparty.com are great, but $12/each?) And the cool toy pictured here, also from plumparty.com, is sold out! Bummer. Any ideas? –Beth J.

Try the dollar tree & and low budget shops. Cheezy I know, but I found great Lady Bug stuff for my daughter’s themed party. Good luck!
You could probably make those lady bugs out of painted styrofoam balls. It’d be cute to have little party favors wrapped up in bug boxes for the kids to take home to catch their own bugs. I saw that Oriental Trading Company has little circular bug boxes ($6/dozen) that can be decorated. Cute!
Do you have time to make surprise balls? They aren’t that hard – it’s just the gathering of the goodies that could take time. You could save some time and start with a little styrofoam ball in the center, but I like to put a little toy inside. notmartha.org has directions. Check out the scrapbooking section of Michael’s (& etc.) for stickers, etc.
I don’t know what they’re called in other areas, but I’ve seen cute bug toys at Paper Party Place or USA Party.
Sounds like a lot of fun!

Little plastic ladybugs
we got real ladybugs from a garden supply store (probably 500 of them) for not very much money and let them go when our daughter was born, we have let another batch free every birthday.
Alicen’s room is decorated in ladybugs, bumblebees and dragon flies…I agree with checking the dollar tree or craft warehouse, micheals as we ended up finding a ton of things for not very much money.
good luck, hope you post with what you decide on.
