what i’m collecting: niagara souvenirs

Whenever I browse around flea markets or antique shops, there is one thing on the top of my “search” list: souvenirs from Niagara Falls. Though in my youth I couldn’t wait to get out of my hometown, as an adult I revel in its bittersweet nostalgia. As a result, I’m gathering quite a little collection of tchotchkes that includes shot glasses, ashtrays, motion lamps and this adorable porcelain creamer I picked up in Maine over the Fourth of July. I love finding Niagara Falls souvenirs far from home. I even picked up a dish in Copenhagen once. If you want to get a sense of what the city is like, take a look at some of these photos by Alec Soth from his series, Niagara . They do a great job of capturing the town’s romantic melancholy. Is there a place that you collect souvenirs from? I’d love to hear about it. — Angela M

Angela, if you’re into souvenirs from Niagara Falls, you have to go see the Tourism and the American Landscape exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. It features all kinds or gorgeous landscapes of iconic American vacation spots (including, of course, Niagara) plus historical displays of the incedible souvenirs these destinations inspired designers to create and tourists to purchase. Here’s the link to the exhibit: http://ndm.si.edu/EXHIBITIONS/tourism_in_america/index.asp
