blogwatch: where have you been clicking?

Isn’t the summertime supposed to be slower? We’ve been swamped at work this week, toiling away on some exciting web-based projects for a couple of corporate big boys. It’s great being busy, but unfortunately it’s cut into our web surfing time. So, dear readers, it’s your turn once again! Where have you been clicking this summer? Tell us about new blogs, small stores, local artists and designers. We’d love to hear from you and about things in your hometown. Click through to the next page to leave a comment, and we’ll write about them next week in this space… Deal?

I spend most of my time surfing houseblogs.net. Yes, I am one of the bloggers on the RSS feed site, along with 295 other housebloggers. It’s such a wonderful time-waster to look at all the amazing projects being done by the everday DIYer. I get some great ideas and feedback from people who are as enthusiastic about their homes as I am!

Am I lazy if I say I just check out your blog along with Design Sponge daily?? I am also becoming addicted to Ebay looking for mounted fish for some reason :)

Been clicking far too many places but most frequently:
decor8.blogspot.com
weewonderfuls.typepad.com
whileshenaps.typepad.com
soulemama.typepad.com
I like a mix of art/craft and home/DIY/design sites

You guys are good. I also check these, which I don’t think you’ve already cited.

I love this food blogger from my hometown:

Mary

http://www.zoestrauss.com, a funny, smart photographer in Philly who keeps a blog about her smart, political, cool photographs, among other things. And, you can buy her work from her, via the site.

Just discovered http://www.sarisafari.com/, beautiful indian fabrics, almost all saris, suitable for any number of uses (in moderation). I’m trying to decide on a few that I have my eye on for tablecloths or curtains — not both — and a few for scarves.

Also new to me is http://www.dorkmag.com, the website for a quarterly I’ve never seen before, but they blog in between issues.

I’m frequently checking in with http://www.nedlamont.com, who’s challenging Sen. Lieberman for Dem. candidacy here in my state of CT. Go Ned!

http://www.chowhound.com has been a useful favorite for a while — if you have the patience for the interface…of which there isn’t much at all…but if you like to eat and you want more of an adventure than a local columnist or Zagat will give you (or you want to know if the kitchen is filthy) check it out.

http://www.myspace.com/dards — These guys rock. How many bands can you think of who could actually use the word “synesthesia” in a song (or a sentence) and have it sound right? Full disclosure, one of them is my brother, but it ain’t all sisterly pride.

Recent clicks–I actually just compiled an on-line vintage directory for my blog, looking at over 230 vintage stores in the process. It’s incredible how many vintage sites there are out there, and almost impossible to decide which stores to include. Still, some favorites:

ShopGoodwill:
http://www.shopgoodwill.com
Timeless Vixen (fun dresses): http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZtimelessvixen
Thriftwares (ditto, though more casual):

hi+lo modern (fantastic vintage accessories & housewares):
http://www.hiandlomodern.com

A recent trip to England also introduced me to the Puppini Sisters, a modern version of the Andrews Sisters. They do classics like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, but also retro versions of “Wuthering Heights” and “Panic.” It’s addictive. http://www.thepuppinisisters.com/

I wish I could say that I don’t spend enough time on the internet each day to be able to have a list of places that I waste… er… spend my time at. But sadly. I *raises hand* Sarah Trover am a blog/internet junkie.
Here is where I spend my time daily:

1) http://www.buzzpatrol.com/ – i can’t get enough sarcasm with my daily dose of popular culture.

2)http://www.kitchencontraptions.com/ – some things are great, some things aren’t, the site is a bit painful, but I do see things there before I see them in other smaller online stores.

3) http://www.myaimistrue.com/ – you will fall in love with her. She embodies food, art, culture, love of dogs and all people.

4) http://www.itsknotwood.blogspot.com/ – I wish there were more people doing work for the site because I know there is more merch out to be shown.

5) http://www.jimbot.com/ – Jimmy is a native of Milwaukee WI and has been a long friend of ours. All of his work is done on small scale (7inches or under) and amazes me everytime I thnk about focusing on something that small to paint with such detail.

6) http://www.milkypop.com/catalog/blog.php – Milkypop has consignment around the country and is based out of Minneapolis, MN. Her site is new, as she used to blog under a different client. But her store is fully functional.

7) http://baradesign.blogspot.com/ – Ohbara is out of Minneapolis MN as well, and has a certain quirky passion for crafting and art and poetry that is unusual and quite comforting all at the same time.

8) http://sprouthome.stores.yahoo.net/index.html – Although I wish they would get a site that wasn’t run by yahoo, it never fails to leave me with a smile towards design AND fun in the home

9) http://www.hammerpress.net/splash.htm – From my hometown of Kansas City Mo, Hammerpress keeps my house rockin as well as stylin

10) http://www.artvscraft.com – Here in Milwaukee WI, it is our own craft fair as well as a link to the Paper Boat where many works of consignment from around the country can be found.

Mimi

I’ve been reading lots of art and craft blogs lately.

http://port2port.visualblogging.com – one of the two bloggers is of port2port press, which makes fantastic letterpress cards. they both take beautiful photos.

http://www.lotteklaver.nl – an illustrator who posts wonderful drawings

http://whipup.net – lots of different writers post about different crafts

http://shisomama.wordpress.com – an artist who writes about life with her son, and makes cut paper collages almost every day.

I’ve been watching http://www.miesandcarrots.com – a blog about building a modern home in Austin.

And, as always, http://printpattern.blogspot.com/ – I can’t get enough gorgeous patterns.
