help! couch needs to be recovered

OK, I admit it: My couch is awful. It was a hand-me-down in 1998. The sucker was once white, and is now dingy and drab. Frankly, it’s just plain dirty — and no steam-clean can save it now. (Yes, Mom, you’re right.) The good news is, it’s got great bones. And I phoned a reupholsterer and got a not-unreasonable quote on recovering it. Now I need to find a fabric, have no idea where to begin. I want something attractive that hides stains and cleans easily. (Not white, thanks to the toddler in the house.) And I would like a pattern, but nothing too busy. Then what? Cotton? Polyester? Pleather or ultrasuede — probably not.
One inspiration I have: I like the print on the couch in NY magazine’s “Great Rooms” feature the other week. (Above on the lower right, with a #7 on it.) Any ideas for good online upholstery fabric destinations? Oh, and the budget? It’s small. — Beth J.

Try B&J fabric, they have great fabric without huge pricetags. You can email them the photo and they will try to match it. The other option would be ebay, sometimes designers sell great fabric that is left over. Certainly worth trying
What about…

I once covered a couch in canvas painters use.
I had my dog walk on the canvas with paint on her paws and used it as the pattern. Then I coated it with light resin and I could wipe the dog hair and dirt right off.
Have you checked out Jomar stores. I’m assuming you are in the NYC. It’s worth the trip to philly…..
They always have supper cheap (like $3-7 a yard) upholstry fabric.
or splurge on fabric and reupholster the couch yourself. It’s scarily easy…..I swear it.
out of curiousity, what was the not-unreasonable upholstering quote you got?
