off the (project) runway: marimekko hangings

We’ve been wondering about this product for a while now: Textile Arts Wall Hanging Kits, and after seeing last night’s Project Runway, thought it was time to point it out. For other PR-Shelterrific fans, you probably noted the presence of the the Unikko print (above) in the boys’ bedroom. This site seems like a great solution for those who want to get the look in their homes. Click here under retro prints find the pattern seen on the show, which unfortunately doesn’t come in the kit. But don’t miss the new patterns. How gorgeous would Grass look hung on a brightly painted wall? The prices are so great, $75-135 each, we might just have to order one. Let us know if you do! We’re curious to hear about how they work.

I have the Lumimarja wall hanging in my living room. It’s wonderful and I get tons of compliments on it. One great thing about these is that people are shocked and amazed to find out that it’s a piece of fabric stapled to a frame, and not a (much more expensive) painting. I figured out that for me at the time it was cheaper to buy the fabric from Textile Arts and then get the frame at my local art supply store (it may have had something to do with the exchange rate – I live in Canada). It was so easy to put together myself, and I absolutely adore it!

It can be even cheaper to buy cuts of Marimekko fabric on ebay and put it on canvas stretchers from an art supply store.

And it can be even cheaper than that, albeit kind of work-intensive, to just buy a big canvas, make your own stencils, and stencil onto it. Unikko-ish isn’t hard to do; Mini Unikko-ish can be a lot of work. Not sure about other patterns. But, this would allow someone with a good eye to match the colors of the hanging to the colors of their room.
