ashley’s painting adventure: bright colors!

My fiancé Jeff got back from India over the weekend and loved what I had done so far. I followed your advice, dear readers, and went with “Olive Moss” for the accent wall in the living room. (And yes, the walls ended up darker than expected, a fact that stunned the novice painter in me). In the office, I painted the top portion of the wall between the moldings Benjamin Moore’s “Yellow Marigold.”

Even Jeff got in on the action. For the dining room, we chose a blue hue and he spent a few hours painting away (as you can see, it’s still a bit from being finished).

Could all these bright colors cause headaches? Maybe. That’s why in the bedroom, we want something a little more mellow, maybe something neutral to match the amazing duvet cover and pillow shams he picked up in India.

Any suggestions? And if we do go with something neutral, would painting just one wall look strange?
Quick tip: Done painting for the day but want to reuse the brushes tomorrow without washing them? Cover them in plastic wrap and stick them in the freezer. When you’re ready to begin painting the next day, pull them out and start again. (Courtesy of Jeff’s Mom, Jeanne B.) — Ashley P.

Wow, the place is looking great! I Can’t wait to come see it in person. What a great tip from Jeff’s mom. I wish I had known that when I was painting my apartment!

In our old place we painted several walls a color called “bamboo” by Dutch Boy, and it was the color we got the absolute most compliments. It’s a very natural khaki color and earthy. I can’t tell if your swatch might be gray, and if it’s gray, then scratch my suggestion as bamboo would not look good with gray.

Love the orange ‘border’ – looks really great!

Oh, I love that stripe above the molding. I’m just painting my house and thinking about how to do accents in bright colors without overwhelming. I had some orange–maybe I can do this with it. My neighbors did an orange celing down to the molding. Looks great!
