smart deco idea: miyo floor covering

Have you guys heard of MiYOfloor covering? I saw a post about it on Not Martha the other day, and it immediately caught my eye (well, it’s ORANGE). MiYO is 16″ square flooring tiles with beveled edges. On its site you can play decorator and choose from a bright palette of designs and patterns, and then apply it to a room (like the one above) to see what it looks like. Installation sounds easy enough; they provide adhesive tabs or a spray adhesive. Because it’s adhered to something called the “grid liner” and not the original floor, you can remove it easily when you change your mind (or move out!). I was telling Alison that could work for the AIRSTREAM she and her cousin are renovating. But wouldn’t it be genius in a kitchen or mudroom? At only $7 a square it seems pretty affordable. What do you think? Would you try MiLO out in your home? — Angela M.

It looks very FLOResque, only more tileish than carpety. I like the colors and patterns on the website, but it was a little vague. I wonder what material the “grid liner ” is made from and if it’s waterproof? I also wonder if it is as easy to cut as FLOR tiles are. We used FLOR in our AIRSTREAM, and even with the curves, it was a cinch to make all the cuts. At 7 bucks a tile though, it looks like a good value.

Maybe I should read the webpage before I say this, but…
don’t the beveled edges make it a pain to sweep? I would think that you’d want all the edges to be flush on the same level, rather than receding into the floor a bit. It just seems dirt would have a tendency to gather on the edges of tiles.

Vinyl tile is pretty cheap in comparison to this; the gridliner/reusability factor seems to be the main difference. I don’t know if it’s worth paying for… areas getting tiled usually have different concerns than areas getting carpeted (those concerns are ease of cleaning, and water repellence). The reasons that people buy FLOR don’t seem as applicable to tile, even though this looks like a cool product in itself.
