site we're psyched about: normalroom.com

Yesterday we were looking at apartmenttherapy.com (as one does during the workday) and were completely tickled by this discovery: Normal Room from Finland. Honestly, it’s like a digital wet dream for us, because all it is is photo after photo of real people’s rooms. Forget stuff-on-your-cat! This is what we want. You click on a layout and choose the room you want to visit (bathroom, kid’s room, kitchen, etc) or you can sort by country (click on a global map). Naturally, there’s a way to upload your own image, and it is our suspicion that soon this will catch on and there will thousands to browse through. Among the current selection: A Chinese bathroom, a kitchen from Germany and a living room from Ireland. it reminds us of another favorite site of ours, Brink Shelter, which we really need to look at more often.

Hm… the Chinese bathroom link isn’t working; it goes to an American bathroom, at the moment – maybe the URLs are dynamic.

It looks like the photo is of a miniature of an Asian bathroom – is it? It could also be one of those photos that have become trendy lately, done with the process that makes everything *look* like miniatures. But I think in this particular room you’d have to be standing on a tall cabinet in the corner to get this angle?

I should post my fiance’s hilariously awful apartment bathroom. The pedestal sink is flaking rust from underneath, the edge of the cabinet door mirror is rusty, and they just ripped up and replaced the floor, as it was apparently leaking to the apartment below. It will make everyone on the entire site feel better about their bathrooms… we definitely have to get him out of there! (Mine is unphotographable, but only because it’s TINY – there is a medium-size shower stall on the far wall, and a toilet and a sink on the side wall, and enough room to walk past the sink and toilet and get into the shower. But only one place to stand, so nobody in the shower could actually get out of it if someone else came into the bathroom!)

great sites (yours, normal room & brink shelter) – thanks for sharing!

Nope, that is a typical Chinese toilet. Unfortunately not in minature. I’ve travelled all over, but let me tell you, I never quite mastered the Chinese toilet. That one is very clean. The public ones are a disaster (shudder). Remember to bring your own paper products!
