happy day! muji + h&m news

Longtime readers of this site will know of our love for MUJI, the Japanese retail chain that makes simple, elegantly designed everyday objects. The story goes that if we need a MUJI-fix, we either have to make a trip a London or make-do with the small selection of MUJI goods at MoMA. Well… not for much longer! It was announced yesterday that two MUJI stores will be opening up in New York this year after July. This is such good news! We know that MUJI will have a small desk that is perfect for Jane (not that she should wait). Also, another retail fave, H&M announced that they’re getting into the home textile markets. We’re not sure what this means, but we hope it leads to some well-priced, groovy bedding and bath gear.

(BTW, the above images came from two great sites: Muji is from The Shanghailist, a cousin of the Gothamist. And H&M is from Curbed LA, where we always check when we’re in need of a real estate troll.)

    I love Muji, too.
But I think it’s originally from Japan.

This is GREAT news!!! When I lived in London I was a frequent shopper at Muji, and always lamented that they should open in NYC. (I have the standard picture frames and desk supplies, but I even have some beautiful, simple clothes from there as well.) Yay! Thanks Angela!!

My husband and I make MUJI our first stop each time we are settled in Paris. The Marais stop has two shops…one is clothing and the other is stuff. We love MUJI and are so happy to hear the NYC news. The first time we visited MUJI (the store near St. Sulpice) we were hooked. We came back to the states and asked a Japanese friend what MUJI meant, she tapped the shirt my husband was wearing (which was out of the norm, a plaid) and said “not this.” We said “Not plaid?” No, she explained, “it means plain.” We’ll never forget that. And my husband hasn’t worn plaid since.

I’m so glad you enjoy curbed LA - we’ve had a few readers tell us they’re sick of hearing about h&m.

and I wish LA was getting a muji - we’re very behind in japanese retail. no uniqlo, no muji. so sad. I loved muji when I lived in london.
