field trip: montreal’s marche jean talon

I’ve been dreaming of a road trip across the country forever but, I’m afraid it will be years before I’ve amassed enough vacation time to embark on such an adventure. So a long weekend and a mini-road trip to Montreal had to hold me over for the time being. There are countless places I would suggest everyone visit (the Museum of Contemporary Art, the lookout atop Mont Royal, the hippie sandwich shop Santropol) but my absolute don’t-miss-it spot would have to be le Marche Jean Talon. A hustling and bustling green market, it features stands from local farms, boucheries, boulangeries and fromageries, as well as several cafés for hot coffee and snacks to keep you warm while you peruse the wares. We strolled around sampling some of the yumminess (like chocolate covered bananas) stopping to watch fresh pasta being made and to admire some beautiful, exotic flowers for sale. This one was 3 ft. tall and the petals spread as wide as a pizza pan! There was even a stand selling about 20 different cranberry products. I wanted to buy armfuls of groceries, but instead we settled on wedge of Brie and a fresh baguette for our six-hour road trip back to NYC. Delicious. — Erica P.

Oh I love Montreal. How far is that from NYC? It takes me about 4 hours…

By the way, we live at the Atwater market when we’re up there, our friends live nearby in a cool rowhouse they’ve restored and we always walk over for stinky cheese, fruit, and these gorgeous africian flowers that I can never seem to find elsewhere. I’m so happy you’ve posted this, I need to call my friends and book a trip… ;)

It took us just about 6 hours from NYC to downtown Montreal. Not a bad ride at all- in fact, it was part of what made the weekend so fun.
