what did you think of last night’s top design?
Episode Three: Beach Cabanas

The latest challenge for the poor, perpetually confused reality show interior decorators? Design a beach cabana. To me this seemed easy. Make something in a cool palette, that’s relaxing, shady and minimal. But these three teams of three just couldn’t figure a damn thing out (btw, working in teams definitely makes the show go faster, phew). Rule number one: A beach cabana needs shade. As soon as I heard the Tahitian team decide to forego the roof, I thought the sun had fried their brains. By far the most poorly decorated cabana was the St. Tropez group — get these three an airplane ticket to France ’cause they are clueless. They based their colors on the French flag? Mon dieu! And the judges were right, the Miami cabana was atrocious. Lime green and purple? All three were bad. All the shopping was done at Pier One and that’s what it looked like. What these people needed was a few cans of white spray paint to make those dark wicker chairs go away. Can’t we just fast-forward to the end when Goil wins? Doesn’t it seem that Jonathan loves saying his name…. “Goil.” But lets be honest, the most interesting thing about last night’s show was Kelly’s Wearstler’s aqua knee socks — or were they St. Tropez blue? — Angela M.

I have to wonder, if the show is a bad as you say why do you keep watching it?

It’s like MTV in the old days: you keep on watching the videos in hopes the next one is better. That said, professional curiosity keeps me tuning in.

I agree with everything you said 100%, you couldn’t have said it better. Makes me want to forget watching this show cause there are SO many issues with it. Where did they get these designers from? Honestly!?

Goil’s design was very cool structure wise. The interior was awful! they all lacked suffient shade. Though we know that there are time restraints and editing it was just a few points less interesting than last week. I wish Todd would offer more constuctive advice.

[...] Episode 4: One Man’s Trash… Finally! Top Design ventures into task we’re all familiar with here at Shelterrific: Trolling yard sales for decorating treasures. Last night, the contestants were given a small budget ($500) and a day of shopping garage sales around Los Angeles to create their rooms. I don’t know what street they all ended up on, but someone tell me where that it is so I can plan my next trip out west! I can’t think of anything more fun than stumbling upon an alley filled with castaways up for grabs. As for the final products, anything as bright as Carisa’s wins my heart. That girl can shop, and it makes you wonder how much better last week’s bungled beach bungalow would have been if she had been the one to go to Pier One. Speaking of which, Mr. Non-Conformist John is so annoying. It’s obvious they’re only keeping him around because he’s the show’s alpha dog. Margaret loathes him, don’t you think? Felicia’s room was very confused, and I can see why she was eliminated. She’s humorless, but the worst of the bunch? I’m not sure. — Angela M. [...]
