field trip: felted animals exhibit

Last week, my ubercrafty neighbor Paula lured me over to the American Swedish Institute to check out the “Feathers and Fibers” exhibit. I flipped over textile artist Yvonne Bavman’s life-size felted penguins, chickens, geese, and other feathered friends. Bavman works out of an old barn, and says the basic process of sculpting her animals (she also makes wingless creatures, like adorable pigs and llamas) is akin to shrinking a wool sweater in hot water. I’m guessing a few washer loads of talent might help, too. Her faux taxidermy is reasonably priced for real artwork (Paula purchased a tongue-in-cheek mounted chicken head for $80 to display in her kitchen), but it’s not yetavailable for online purchasing. If interested, Bavman says Shelterrific readers can contact her directly: Yvonne@bavman.se. Check out her online gallery at www.bavman.se. — Megan K.
