storage you can love: pure nomade’s hotel boxes

Our Daily Candy email this morning was about Pure Nomade’s Hotel Boxes. We’ve spotted them in British mags, but didn’t know how to buy — ’til now! These stackable boxes come in eight different groovy patterns (our favorite is White Blonde — white lace on black print) and are the perfect thing to stash your ever-growing shoe collection. They arrive flat, and stay that way until you snap ‘em into shape. A dust-lid in front seals the deal and ensures your goodies are easy to find. They can support up to 11 pounds of weight and be stacked up to 10 feet high. Available at Yoyashop.com for $25 each. Pricey, yes. But think of it as a multi-functioning art-installation for your room.

I’ve seen these positioned before as shoe boxes, which I thought was kind of hilarious for anyone who wears other than… well, serious bespoke European-leather shoes. I have several pairs of $200-300 shoes, and I wouldn’t personally spend this much on shoeboxes. (Because, I mean, they’re shoeboxes. As with media storage, where I kind of object on principle to paying more than $1/item in storage capacity: something that only holds 50 cds should not cost $200.)

However, the way they’re displayed here – the temporary shelving angle – makes a lot more sense, & looks nice. Also, a really nice shoe cabinet probably doesn’t cost much more per pair, though there are many cheaper options & these won’t necessarily look more organized than the more economical avenues would. They also sound like a reasonable idea for travel, maybe if you’re going to be a guest in someone’s house for longer than a few days, and they don’t have a drawer to offer you.

I wonder how much the inevitable knockoffs will cost?

I like them a lot, I personally really enjoy looking at all of the great colors and textures and patterns in my closet, and I would enjoy having an open, very need closet that utilize these boxes as a storage unit, it would be very luxurious, I wonder if they would be easy to make by hand? thanks for the inspiration!

Michelle – they are structured like a milk-carton, widened, with the “opening” part at both ends (in terms of the milk carton, not in terms of where these open), and a cut-out on the side filled in with cellophane, mylar, etc. They look like they’d be pretty easy to mock up, to me, if you had a carton to take apart and use as a model, but you’d need some really big sheets of paper/board and a bone folder.

I think these boxes are super but oy, so expensive!

I like Miranda’s rule of thumb about not paying more that $1/item for a storage solution. And yes, they do seem destined to be knocked-off pretty soon.
