don't miss movie décor: the lives of others

The other week we featured a post-off called What’s Your Favorite Movie Decor and realized you are big movie buffs just like us. Going forward, we’ll let you know whenever we see something on the big screen that catches our decorating eyes.

Last weekend, Chad and I went to see The Lives of Others, which just won the best foreign-language Academy Award. The film itself is outstanding, a heart-wrenching story that follows a melancholy government surveillancer, and the subjects of his current investigation in East Berlin, in 1984 — a few years before the wall would come down. Those being watched, a writer and his actress girlfriend, live a life that is enviable by, many, especially in this bleak and repressed time. Their apartment is beautifully detailed, with chandelier medallions, amazingly high ceilings and gorgeous wood trim — but the decor is totally mod-70’s. Two things had me mesmerized: The first was a group of steel, rounded pendant lamps hanging where a chandelier would have (Arco, perhaps?), and the second was this Flokati headboard in the bedroom (above). Interesting idea, but also, a little gross (how do you clean that?). Go see the film this weekend and let me know what you think! — Angela M.

Check out our previous post on movie decor here and definitely let us know if your next movie night has you focusing on the set decoration.

I just moved back from Berlin and there are still soooo many apartments that look like that, both empty and furnished. And they are cheap. If one wanted to have that lifestyle for a weekend, I’m sure there are Berliners who would rent out their pad…

You’d vacuum that flokati-style headboard with a brush attachment, and probably, occasionally, wipe it down with a damp cloth.

It’s just my guess that something like that might be detachable for washing, too – but has anyone outside of this movie ever had one? :)
