sales that make us happy: 20% off high-tech toaster oven

Last summer, when our building’s gas line was shut down for a month, I discovered the joys and necessity of owning a toaster oven. They’re great to use when the weather is hot and you don’t want to heat up your whole house with the oven. The one we own now dates back to my college days (and yes, that was a long, long time ago) and basically just top browns anything you stick in there. I’ve been wanting a new one and this high-tech digital dandy at Unica Home is a strong contender. Designed by Konstantin Grcic for Krups, its interior space is a third larger than most other models. Heated air circulates around the food so it cooks more quickly; plus, it comes with six different settings, self cleans, and, oh yeah, it’s on sale! Oh, yeah, toaster ovens are great! So much better than regular toasters, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have one. But…
If heated air circulates etc, it’s a convection oven, which most of the more expensive toaster ovens also are. That’s sort of neither here nor there, except that some people might want only a toaster oven.
I have to say that I have had a bunch of different toaster ovens over the years, from very expensive ones to very cheap ones. I’ve never really been satisfied with higher-end models, both in the way the controls worked and in the way they actually cook foods.
The best toaster oven I’ve ever had is my current one, which was also the cheapest and must be about 10 years old (it, too, is nearing replacement stage, as it is starting to only top-brown things). It’s a $25ish model by Sunbeam & is the one I would recommend to people. But if you plan to regularly cook meals in your toaster oven, or roast vegetables, or etc, a spendier convection oven might be better.
I don’t know if the one at Unica is quite worth the price; you can usually get something similar (w/r/t the number of settings and the convection features) for about $100 (I know I have something like that on my wedding registry at Bed Bath & Beyond, but I’m probably going to take it off and just buy a new Sunbeam). The extra space, nonstick interior, and defrost functions look helpful, but if you’re just defrosting bread/waffles, toasting them works fine anyway.
