I have a Pfaff that I paid almost $1300. for 28 years ago. I have never had any problems with it and I have sewn canvas awnings, leather, down jackets, and silk:) The even feed is awesome. I also have an Elna and numerous vintage sewing machines (Singer, White, Mueller, Wilcox & Gibbs) My daughter has a Bernina top of the line and I must say while it's very nice I prefer Pfaff. (The even feed makes the difference). She has a walking foot for her Bernina but it's not as efficient.
I guess it's just like buying a car- everyone likes something different:)

I believe that if you set your stitch length to 0 it will have the same effect as dropping the feed dog. As to which machine to buy, I'm a Husqvarna Viking girl. My mum always had a Husqvarna, and the two machines I have used over 20 years have been Huskies. The first, a very basic Husqvarna my parents gave me for my 16th birthday, still gets used. Can't fault it. They have been sensational. I have a feeling that you are born into the machine you will use - ie. whatever you learned with you will continue to use.

The thing about machines from 30 years ago is that they are generally better built machines. They usually have metal machine parts instead of plastic. It also means they are very heavy. I bought a small Pfaff hobby machine about 5 years ago and I like it just fine, but I'm not a crazy expert sewer either.

My Mom made me learn to sew on a Singer— a Singer treadle machine. She thought it would teach me patience and to go slow. It did, to a point. Then I got to move up to her Bernina. She has had it over 30 years and other than taking it in for cleanings, has not had to do a single thing to it. I have my Grandma's FL machine, an old Singer, and it does the job, but if I was going to spend the money, Bernina all the way!

Hi, thanks for sharing. I sold my show saddle and want to start quilting. My machine, a Penny's is 30 years old and does not drop the feed dogs to stipple quilt. So, I need a new machine. Some say it has to be a Bernina. I learned on a Pfaff and the repair man says that is what to buy. So, what do you quilters think? Thanks, I am anxious to get started on a couple projects before I start teaching again Jan. 4th.
Thanks for Any Info. You Send,
Kathy

I've been sewing on a 33 year old Kenmore and it has never needed even one repair but wanted something for quilting and just purchased the Kenmore 19110. I love it and would recommend it highly. It is so easy to thread and wind bobbins and to use. The stitches are beautiful. It sews all thick fabrics and thin. Came with lots of feet and I bought the quilting package too for about $25.00. It came with about 4 feet and the walking foot. I love this machine. I had researched for months and then happened on the machine at Sears Outlet store. It was brand new, never opened but the box had been damaged. So bought it right then and there with the assurance I could take it back if something was wrong. It is wonderful - no problems at all. Love the needle threader - oh my is that something else.

I bought a used pfaff 1475 fifteen years ago for $1700. Before you faint, I've had the machine for 15 years and aside from a checkup every 3 or 4 years just to make sure it gets serviced properly, I've never had to had the thing fixed. I've made clothes, quilts (I machine quilt in addition to machine piece) and home decorating projects on the thing and it just keeps on sewing and sewing and sewing......

Sometimes you get what you pay for.
