don’t miss movie décor: in the land of women
Our friend Thelma is a professional movie critic who also loves talking about home décor. Since she sees just about every movie that opens, she’s kindly agreed to let us know when she spots big screen homes that are Shelterrific worthy. Thanks, Thelma!
I often seen movies that feature the “kitchen of my dreams” but in the new Meg Ryan film, In The Land of Women, her character’s kitchen had me plotting a renovation in my mind. It’s a hybrid room, full of tips for mixing modern and traditional. The Shaker-style white cabinets can be easily replicated (kraftmaid.com has a similar square solid raised door). They’re a plain backdrop for what makes the kitchen sing: a mix of modern and traditional elements. The counters alternate carrera marble – I love those gray veins, but worried about wear in my own reno – and stainless. The dishwasher and micro are stainless; the oven’s white. The square hardware and drawer pulls pick up the masculine stainless theme – designed by a woman, but made to please a husband. The most stiking touch in a predominantly neutral room? Above white wainscoting, vibrant blue walls painted to match Ryan’s eyes (Benjamin Moore Wedgewood Gray? Farrow and Ball Green Blue?) Hmm – would it look as good in hazel? — Thelma Adams
Thelma Adams is the film critic for Us Weekly, and writes historical fiction. She lives in upstate NY and has a pretty sweet, recently renovated kitchen of her own.

I do love that paint color. It would interesting to see what she says about other movies. Especially when they involve massive lofts in New York that no normal person could afford.

Kristi, I totally understand. It’s the Friends syndrome. How can they afford those Manhattan apartments on those salaries? On some level, I have to think production designers create their dream kitchens on opm. Will try to find movies that give a lot for little money (a friend of mine shot her film in her own barn renovation and environs), but part of the fun is the total fantasy of it.

Oh, this is a fun post. And, let me tell you, a nationwide trend happened the day the movie, “Something’s Gotta Give” came out with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. That kitchen launched a new relaxed traditional look, sort of a butler’s pantry kitchen “look”, as I call it. It’s still popular and gaining momentum. Lovelovelove to see these kitchens!
