help! what should I do with this plaid tape?

shelter_plaidtape.jpg

I had nothing in mind when I pressed “enter” on the online order form, but idea or not — I absolutely just had to have this plaid duct tape from LL Bean. (And to think I had pegged the LL Bean catalog as a haven solely for the camping, canoeing, wood-loving outdoorsy types!) I’ve been a fan of plaid for as long as I (or anyone who knows me) can remember. From fashion statement to home décor, I’ve worn and decorated with the best of it. So now that my tape is en route what ever will I decide to do with it? Perhaps I’ll use strips of the tape to personalize the cover of a simple notebook or maybe I’ll add a pretty plaid stripe around the neck of my dime-a-dozen flower shop vase. Will my rather impulsive purchase turn into a lesson of buyers remorse or will I come up with the perfect use for my plaid tape? Any suggestions? — Erica P.

What a terrific find…so fun. I’m thinking it would be a great trim on the edge of a windowsill or shelf. How about trimming an ordinary window shade. You are right…the possibilities are endless.

    Make a tape kilt.

That’s fantastic, I always buy stuff like that when I see it!

What about covering a picture frame? would be cute for Christmas, or a kid’s room, even an office… you could hide the seams by glue-ing some black or yellow velvet ribbon on the diagonals… You could even use it on the matting?

I love these, too! What about putting it on along the front edge of a shelf on bookcase?

i have relatives all over so i would use it as sort of a gift wrap when shipping packages. It would look very stylish on a white corrogated box to hide the brown edges.

You could also use it to add stripes to the plain walls inside a closet or the plain drawers of a dresser. (Just a random idea, since I’m a fan of neither stripes nor plaid.)

Duct tape has so many uses already, but this esthetically pleasing variation has expanded the horizon beyond comprehension.

How about taping the wires that are always scattered around electronics. Pretty and functional!

Tape up a small tissue box, thus making it refillable (green!) and pretty (and unique).

Or decorate a set of something like sewing or scrap booking supplies with this. Or even tools (like the handles of all the screw drivers!)

I’m a plaid loving prep myself. Perhaps border an inspiration board in it? It would make typical brown paper packages look even snazzier than they do with string…

P.S. June’s Wallpaper* had a feature on printed tapes like this - just saw it today.

    Oooo! Loveliness! Use it:
    - when mailing packages, because it’s much lovelier than plan old packing tape.
    - recover paperbacks with white paper and border them with tape; makes the book look like it MIGHT be weighty, and it’s pretty, too.
    - wouldn’t it be fun to tape a border around the edge of a black umbrella, and maybe a “patch” in the middle somewhere?

Yay. Plaid is my favorite color. Yes, I know it’s not a color…it’s a pattern. I don’t know where to begin with the tape. I’d be overwhelmed by it’s fabulousness and probably leave it sitting on my desk for weeks to stare at. Good luck!

This is funny, because I am staring longingly at the red plaid duct tape in the LL Bean catalog this very minute, but first wanted to check on-line to see if maybe I could find it locally and not pay S/H. My sister and I are both red-plaid freaks since way back, and I want to get some for myself and for her as a gift. I love everyone’s ideas here! (Angela M., I particularly like your idea of the front edge of a shelf in a bookcase.) I can picture dozens of uses…so, erica, no buyer’s remorse! You’ve got lots of company anyway.

If you like that tape, you might be interested in copper tape! I saw it at a big chain home improvement warehouse in the gardening section. It is used for creating slug barrier zones in gardens. I resisted buying it because I didn’t know what I would use it for, but the crafty potential is there as well.

i’ve ordered the tape myself and i’ll be making a purse out of the red, not so sure about the green……will have to wait and see.
