one mom’s quest for the perfect diaper bag
In honor of Mom’s day weekend, we give the blog over to Chad’s sister Cassie, who is quietly amassing the world’s largest diaper bag collection. Click through to the next page to she shopping links to her favorites.

Since giving birth to my daughter, Ruby, almost three years ago, I have become obsessed with diaper bags. I think it’s because I’m also obsessed with organization and let’s face it, a diaper bag has so many pockets, holders, and hidden sleeves, that I have a place for everything. These bags are made of amazing material — they are all waterproof, stain proof, and usually wipe clean with, well, a baby wipe. I should also note that I am equally obsessed with concealing the fact that I’m carrying a diaper bag. All my bags have to look as though I’m not actually carrying around bottles, binkys and butt paste. This rules out the hundreds of pastel pink and blue and Winnie the Pooh bags out there. I have one for the office, that looks like a black tote. I have a weekend bag, a tiny bag for quick errands, a faux suede bag, and even a manly bag for when my husband takes the girls out. Since the birth of my second daughter, Violet, four months ago, I’m afraid my obsession has gotten much, much worse!

My most recent find was for my husband, who is now a work-from-home dad — messenger-type bag I found in the men’s section of Target that has enough pockets to put any diaper bag to shame. It’s made of durable canvas, comes in colors like army green and faded black and has a sleeve on each side for one bottle and one sippy cup. I was actually a little jealous when I wrapped it up and presented it to him. Of course, the love affair will end the next time I’m picking up diapers at the baby superstore and just happen to wonder into the diaper bag aisle “just to look.” — Cassie F.
Here are some more of Cassie’s bags:
Classic Pooh Satellite Changer, Mini Tote, $10
Eddie Bauer Heritage Tote, $30
Nylon Tote with Chocolate & Pink stripes, $20

Thanks Cassie. I know I’m not alone with my bag obsession, so I appreciate the help with the diaper bags; a whole new genre of bags for me to explore. As I’m expecting my first baby this summer, I have been surfing the web trying to find the perfect diaper bag. The one my husband likes is from diaperdude.com, a camo messenger model, and I have recently found another messenger bag and backpack model at dadgear.com. All of these are pricey though, so I’m not sure I can justify the purchase, yet…

Lexie Barnes makes gorgeous and smart diaper bags: http://www.lexiebarnes.com/collection/baby.htm
How great are they? I don’t even have a baby, and I use one (the “Darling”) as a laptop bag and carry-on bag. Favorite features: internal and external pockets in various sizes, padded strap, gorgeous fabrics.
These bags are pricier than the ones mentioned here, but they’re so sturdy and versatile, you can use them for years.
