help! my husband wants potpourri in the bathroom!
My husband recently announced, out of nowhere, that he would like to have potpourri in the bathroom. I am so not a fan of potpourri, at least the dried cinnamon sticks and brown stuff I remember from Christmases as a child. So, what kinds of potpourris or scent options exist? I am not interested in super-synthetic items like plug-ins or sprays. We have limited sturdy horizontal space (we only have a 36 x 12 windowsill and a terry-cloth-topped stool), so candles aren’t a great option either. Our bathroom has a lovely yellow, black and white scheme, straight from 1951. — Thanks! Lexy

Hi Lexy! Thanks for your question. Your hubby is probably asking for potpourri because he doesn’t know about the great advances that have been made in home fragrances recently! Thank goodness we’ve moved far beyond cinnamon sticks and brownstuff. The best, non-candle option, in our opinion, is a fragrance diffuser with sticks. This is a bottle of scented oil that comes with thin wooden reeds. You place the reeds in the oil and fragrance will be diffused in your room. Our favorite is Alora Ambiance’s Bimbi, $50. It’s meant for kids’ rooms, but with a light, fresh scent of lavender, chamomile, bergamot and rose. It’s pricey, but it will last a long, long time (we’ve had one for over a year). Another option is a sort of modern-day potpourri — porous ceramics that you scent with oil. We like this marine scent at Unica Home, $32, but if you want more of a selection, check out the collection of Esteban ceramic potpourri at Gifts that make Scents. If you want something you can plug into an electrical socket, but that smells natural, try Method’s Aroma Pill, $10. This is a very light scent. Another option would be incense, though the smell can be strong. Still, these Buddha incense burners from Sprout Home are so cute, $6.25, it’d be worth a try!

Scented ceramics, who knew? Well, you guys did and I’m very grateful. They look like seaglass, beautiful! I’m ordering some today.
Thanks, Lexy

We have a colonial India motif thingy going on in our bathroom. I found several cool brass cone incense burners at thrift stores, and I keep several incense cones in them. Even without burning them, they lightly scent the bathroom, and only need replacing every eight weeks or so.
