The high road to Taos, NM from Santa Fe is littered with interesting stops, but the only one that I insist on making every trip is to Leona’s Restaurante de Chimayo. More of a take-out stand than a restaurant, the tiny shop is located right next to the historic church and offers its own kind of magic — Leona’s famous tamales. This trip we made a miraculous discovery: Leona’s ships! You can buy the tamales frozen by the dozen and they will overnight them via Fed-X. (The tamale’s are cheap, $20 or so for a dozen, but the shipping can be pricey depending where you live). We highly recommend the chicken-chile ones.
