Don't brown paper bags contain glue that can vaporize when heated in a microwave? I use an old-fashioned stovetop popper with a rotating paddle that keeps kernels from burning. Makes perfect popcorn every time!

Hi guys, my family and I did the paper bag route on making popcorn for awhlie. We found that to really get a substantial amount of popcorn it was a lot of work, messing with the power settings and so forth... Anyways we found these great bags from http://stores.ebay.com/zapbags that have the same special heating technology as normal microwave bags and they give u the benefit of making your own popcorn. It is only 6 bucks to try it out....

It may look really kitschy (okay, it really is kitschy) but I use this to make my popcorn: http://cgi.ebay.com/1977-Shirley-Jones-Sunbeam-Great-Popcorn-Machine-Ad_W0QQitemZ7220497231QQcmdZViewItem

This popcorn maker has been in the family for ages and it's the only way I'll make popcorn. Plus it's fun to watch!

Here's to making popcorn the old (albeit, cheesy) fashioned way! lol

Hi,

Personally I kind of like popping popcorn the old-fashioned way and rarely eat microwave popcorn, but after hearing about the acid it produces, I don't think I'll ever eat it.

If your interested in learning about more ways to go green, you might want to check out some of <a href="http://www.instructables.com/tag/?q=green&limit%3Atype%3Ainstructable=on&type%3Ainstructable=on&type%3Auser=on&type%3Acomment=on&type%3Agroup=on&type%3AforumTopic=on" rel="nofollow">these other Instructables</a>.

Sincerely,
Randy

I hate to come over all old-fashioned - but why not make popcorn in a saucepan? It's an even greener option because you can wash the pan and use it again. It really doesn't take all that much longer than popping in the microwave oven - you won't strave while you wait or anything.

Alton Brown on the Food Network did this a couple years ago, I've done it since. But I do it the healthy and not-going-to-ruin-my-microwave way. Just air-pop in the paper bag, If you fold the top down twice (need to in my tiny micro) it shouldn't pop open. Just do individual servings, pour just enough kernels to cover the floor of the bag, nuke til you stop hearing it pop. Add butter/salt afterwards. Tastes better with real butter anyway. :)

Yeah, I recently started trying to avoid making microwaved popcorn. The junk on the inside of the bag is enough to turn me off.

I got <a href="http://www.popcornlovers.com/Microwave-Popping-Bowl-12-cup--P34C3.aspx" rel="nofollow">this microwave popper</a>. for Christmas, which may interest people who don't want to use paper bags. It seems to create just as good popcorn, plus doubles as a seving bowl.

If you seriously want to treat yourself, splurge on some <a href="http://www.popcornlovers.com/Popcorns-Seasonings-C1.aspx" rel="nofollow">Fireworks popcorn</a>. It's fantastic. The Starshell Red is my favorite.

Microwave popcorn actually has a really bad chemical in it that is causing all sorts of lung problems in people working in the factories where it's made:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/06/AR2007050601089.html?referrer=reddit

Making it in a paper bag is so much better for everyone's health and the environment.
