having a sopranos finale party? try eggplant parmesan

I have most definitely been in denial. I just can’t believe that The Sopranos is really ending. There’s just one more show left, and even though many of the characters we came to love are with us no more, there’s still Tony and Carmella, and those big Italian dinners. A few weeks ago I tested out this Fresh Direct recipe. Have you ever used fresh direct food delivery? Here in NYC, it’s a godsend, especially when you’re entertaining. Anyway, they’ve developed a huge database of recipes, and when you see one you want to make, you just click, and all the ingredients you need for it get placed in your shopping cart. I’ve been making eggplant parmesan for years, and this recipe from the book Staff Meals from Chanterelle is pretty similar to what I always do. EP is time consuming — slicing, battering, frying and then layering. The only thing I would do is NOT peel the eggplants (I like the skin) and I’d salt the slices and drain them in a colander for an hour or so first. It’s also nice if you have fresh sauce, but it is by no means necessary. The end results are awesome, and even better the next day. You can freeze it too! We had our Sopranos party this last Sunday as several of our friends will be out of town for the finale. I made Not Martha’s awesome sausage calzones and a salad with low-fat creamy Italian dressing from The 15 Minute Vegetarian Gourmet. Our friends made baked ziti and manacotti and there was also “healthy” cannolis and tiramisu. So much good food!

We’re doing a big antipasto, baked ziti and romaine and fennel salad. Friends are bringing limoncello cheesecake and cannolis. (And wine. Because that’s really the most important part.)

Hate to gratuitously rub it in that I’m only in Season 1 from Netflix (where has this great show been all my life??) but a few years ago, my friend Laura had a Sopranos party and served the baked ziti with little meatballs from the Sopranos cookbook, and it was phenomenal! I’m a notorious snob about Italian food, so the fact that I’m still reminiscing about it years later says a lot.

That looks good, but I’m afraid I would be stoned if I tried to serve a vegetarian meal at our house. Chicken parm could work, though.
