help! i need mod outdoor furniture for our deck
You guys were so great with my cat tree question I thought I would try again. We are looking for some outdoor furniture (table and chairs) for our art deco-ish 1950s house with a large back deck. We saw some great furniture at cb2.com (Eddy rectangular outdoor table and rex chair) that were pretty much exactly what we were looking for but they don’t carry it anymore. So we were wondering if you guys could help. What we liked most about the cb2 stuff was that it was metal and thus better in the Seattle rain and colorful (the chairs come in poppy). Thanks so much, Brandi and John

Hi guys, thanks for writing again — we love repeat customers! We’ve been looking around at the usual suspects for you, and have to say, there is not a lot of fun happening in the world of outdoor furniture. Most everything is made of natural materials like wood and rattan — which can be lovely, but very low key. It sounds like you need something with a bit more pizzazz to go with your groovy Seattle home. And so, we have the answer for you in one word: Go vintage! You’ll save money and there’s a ton of great stuff out there. It may need a fresh coating of paint (be sure to use an exterior-grade one that is water resistant) or maybe a new cushion, but those fixes are easy and allow you to customize. Check out this site, Dowah Diddy, which is filled with pieces from the 50s. And of course, eBay will not let you down. We like these metal 1950s patio chairs. Or how ’bout these Salterini patio chairs. Another site worth investigating is retro metal lawn furniture (name says it all!) and one of our favorite vintage shops, modhaus.com. Better yet, save yourself those shipping costs and hit a flea near you. Does anyone else have suggestions for Brandi? Do you know anywhere that sells funky, new outdoor furniture?

The “orbit” chairs at Pier 1 actually have a groovy shape that might work for you…

There’s always Bubble Club from Design Within Reach if you have a lot of money to spare! I would also love to be one of those people who have a bunch of Panton chairs outside, but right now I only have two and they’re staying inside.
(PS I’m also in Seattle and we went the cheap route and got a table and chairs off Craigslist.)

if you like the retro metal outdoor furniture website - check out a Menards - we just bought 2 chairs there for $60 a piece. And they have the gliding rockers too ($99?) - plus matching little tables. Comes in minty green, cornflower blue, and a rich white. Not bad.

I actually have a 1950’s set of outdoor patio tables.. they are triangular in shape and can be put together to form a square or a rectangle for a buffet. They are green and orange.. I know.. bright colors…but they are truly 1950’s style. I am in MA, but would ship them to you if you were interested. I’ll send you images of them if you wish.

Hi - I have a 1950’s metal ourdoor table and 4 chairs in very good original condition (white) by Salterini. They have a great mid-century modern design. I can send photos if you’re interested. I am in Long Island, New York and can ship the set if you’re interested. Michael
