help! i’m looking for a corkboard like the one in the breakup

Do you know anything about the board that was in the entry way of the condo in The Breakup? The best I could tell was perhaps it was a dark brown cork board, but I am not sure. There were pictures pinned to it …odds and ends. I would like to replicate this idea in my own home but would like more details. — Leann

Hi Leann! You have great timing, because last night I was home missing the Sopranos, and ended up tuning into The Breakup on HBO. I was completely distracted throughout the film because I became obsessed by that bulletin board! You’re right, it’s a great decor element, especially for someone like Jennifer Aniston’s art gallery worker character, who happens to have nude drawing lying around. It is really hard to find a ready made, framed corkboard that is attractive. Sometimes you’ll find them at places like Pottery Barn, but not right now. Girl About Town wrote about a similar quest over at Domino’s Daily Dose a while back, and recommends you search for cork “panels.” Her link to A.I. Freidman doesn’t seem to work anymore, but I found these over at amazon.com for about $9 each. Buy a half a dozen, and then create your own large bulletin board on your wall. But here’s another idea: At the end of the movie, when everything had been moved out the apartment (sorry for spoiler if you haven’t seen!) the board was still there on the wall. And to me it looked more like a stained, porous piece of wood, rather than cork. You could ask your local carpenter to recommend something that would be easy to mount. Just a thought! Does anybody else have suggestions for Leann? Let us know! — Angela M.

If you search around at Martha Stewart, there are a few options. There’s this one from Forbo, or you can go with the homasote covered with a dark fabric. I just did this recently and it works wonderfully. There are directions at Martha for doing this and placing it in a frame but I made two large ones without frames and it turned out great!

We did something like this with a large magnetic dry erase board in our kitchen. We bought it unframed via a local school supply company and then framed it into the kitchen. Our toddler has a place to go crazy with the (dry erase) markers and magnets and we use it to note the menu for the week. I recommend checking with local or online school supply companies!

There is a wonderful on line and catalog mail order company- Ballard Designs http://www.ballarddesigns.com and search “Cork boards”. They have beautiful large boards from $79 (26×21) to $500 (0uch! but a big 53×83) and sizes in between.

Check office supply stores: officedepot.com and officemax.com have ‘em.

Your local custom frame shop (full disclosure: I work for one) can frame any cork board you bring in, any size. It’s a good choice if you have a particular decor you want to match. (Some people also frame flat screen TV’s, chalk boards, lots of different things!)

if you find the cork you want - i recommend upgrading the look by having it custom framed. we did this with a super wide, black frame and i love it.

goes great in a kitchen too!

i have a framed smaller version from target! i don’t think they come that big, though. you might try a craft store.

I think in the movie it may just be a full sheet of untreated homasote with a wood frame. It would be really easy to attach molding to the edges of a sheet of homasote and just hang they whole thing up.

    Hi,
Cork can be super expensive and often times not think enough to be such a huge piece/ have push pins go all the way through.
The best option, which I use as my inspiration boards in my studio is this: go to Home Deopt and have them cut a piece of HOMOSOTE BOARD to your desired size. Find a great piece of fabric at a upholstery fabric store and staple gun it to the back. Then, you can either just screw it onto your wall with anchors or have it framed at a frame shop. Homosote actually holds puns, etc. better than cork and lasts even longer!
    Good Luck!

Shhhh…I dumpster dived behind a frame shop and got some GORGEOUS frames that were being thrown out (old frames that people had decided to reframe). I popped a $9 corn board into it from Target. It’s wonderful. I’ll try and snap a picture tonight and dump it up on my blog.

If you don’t mind waiting awhile, Target always has cork squares around the beginning of the school year. I find them in the “dorm decorating” section. They’re about 12″ x 12″ and they come in a package of 4 four about $6 (if I remember correctly). You can buy as many as you want and arrange them in whatever shape you want. They’re a bit thin, so you’ll probably want to put them on a thin wood or double them up.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions for the cork board. All are great and I know I can come up with something.

Full disclosure: I work for artselect, but I really do think our framed cork and chalk boards are cool. The pre-framed ones are ready to ship, or if you can wait a little longer you can choose pretty much any frame we have!
