goods to be green: sun ovens

shelter_solaroven.jpg

A friend pointed out this article at the San Francisco Chronicle on solar ovens. They’re made by a company called Sun Oven and cost $260. They can maintain temperatures of 350 degrees, and judging by the pictures of apricot cobbler and other goodies at the paper’s site, do a pretty good job. The article include links on where to buy, a timeline on the history of solar powered ovens (dates back to ancient Greeks) and a few recipes. Check it out here.

I made my own solar oven a couple of summers ago out of moving boxes. Mine didn’t get to 300 degrees, but it did get in the 200’s, so I was able to use it to cook vegetables. Fabulous way to cook. Dirt cheap to make and even cheaper to use, my vegetables came out delish. Naturally sweet and flavorful. There are lots of free plans on the net if you want to try making your own.

I won my high school physics challenge with a solar oven. I got my sun oven hotter than the kit my teacher purchased. =) I love being a nerd.
