help! i need new carpeting for my staircase
I’m getting ready to replace the carpet on my staircase and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions for good looking and stain resistent styles. I love the stripes that I’ve seen but not sure if a pattern is the best choice. The staircase is a bit dark but with dogs, cats, boyfriends, etc. we really need something that won’t easily show the dirt. I love the Flor tiles you got for your hallway which got me thinking about patterns and colors. — Lynda

Lynda! We must admit we were a little stumped by your question and apologize for taking so long to get it up. Last week we came across this post at Design*Sponge and immediately thought of you! It’s a been floating around few design blogs and it’s from At Home With Color by Matthew Dennison. Does anyone have any idea where you can buy carpeting like this? It’s so gorgeous.
Though we didn’t find a lot of sources for colorful carpeting online (you probably need to go to store) we did fine some good advice about what to do once you get it, including this how to install a stair runner from This Old House. You want to carefully measure everything befor you buy. The rule books say that a runner should be about 6 inches narrower than the staircase measured between a baluster and the skirtboard. But rules are meant to be broken!
Does anyone else have advice where to find a fun carpet for Lynda’s stairs? Leave a comment and let her know!

With your dirt/heavy traffic concerns maybe one of the Scandinavian plastic rugs would work. You can get some styles from the Scandinavian Design Center and some more from Scandinavian Details.

Love the look of striped runners on stairs. I spent far too much time combing the internet looking for a resource and then came across one in the first issue of Blueprint. Dash and Albert has lots of great striped rugs and several are available by the yard for stair runners.

I saw this rug in a different home in Living Etc. last Novemeber and just loved it. It’s Cath Kidston via The Rug Company and is 85 pounds (price not weight) per square meter. Never seen anything like it but I sure do love it.
