ode to eva zeisel

Eva Zeisel is one of my design idols. When Crate and Barrel started reproducing her Hallcraft era designs a few years ago I got weak in the knees. Madame Zeisel has lived through bootleg liquor, Hitler and the dawning of the age of Aquarius, at least according to Carl Jung’s timeline. I bring this up because I was flipping through the DWR catalog and they are selling the Eva Zeisel Table. It is so elegantly baroque and existential, I weep. Um, she started designing tables in her nineties. This is no joke. She is now one hundred and one. I own the gravy boat, an original. I bought it on eBay. I also have the Magic Language #2 print from KleinReid. She was once accused of plotting to kill Stalin and imprisoned. Ho hum. — Allison R.

P.S. Read more about Eva — and see some amazing photos of her! — here at npr.org.
