new obsession: skinny cow frozen treats

shelter_skinnycow.jpg

It’s been a hot, hellish week here in the Big Apple. Too tired to cook (thank God for leftovers), or even venture out for a pint of ice cream, I’m grateful that our freezer is well stocked with some frozen goodies. Our latest discovery are these Mini Fudge Pops by Skinny Cow. There’s ony 50 calories per pop, and I have to say, they’re pretty damn satisfying! Now I’m on the hunt for the chocolate peanut butter ice cream sandwich. Wonder if they’re as good as those yummy Tofutti treats Megan introduced us to? Got any frozen snack suggestions to share? Hurry, while it’s still hot out there! — Angela M.

Since I usually love your recommendations so much I feel like I have to be the voice of caution here. You’d be better off with a small portion of real, high-quality ice cream containing real ingredients. Like most low-fat products, these are loaded with junk - from the website, the ingredients list: skim milk, sugar, corn syrup, cream, cocoa processed with alkali, whey, calcium carbonate, guar gum, natural and artificial flavor, mono and diglycerides, locust bean gum, polysorbate 80, pectin, dextrose.

I know you are right, Chez Shoes… but who can eat only a little bit of ice cream? Even a half a cup of Ben & Jerry’s has nearly 300 calories and, according to this site, their frozen yogurts and such, also contain corn syrup and other man-made stuff:

I owe you big time for pointing me to the Barefoot Contessa’s Chinese Chicken Salad, so here’s my recommendation for you: Helados Mexico. I am partial to the Rum Raisin, myself.

You’re right, Angela– (though I tend to steer clear of corn syrup) many of those additives are not as scary as they might sound–lots of fancy ice creams contain natural gums, and you might know “cocoa processed with alkali” by its more snobby name, “Dutch-processed cocoa.”

Oh my — Helados sounds yummy… there’s a tamarind flavored pop! I will have to look in some local bodagos for them. Thanks Mamacita.

I also am a (guilty) worshipper of the Skinny Cow treats! I do try to avoid them, however, mostly because they are quite pricey. Last year I invested in one of those frozen-pop molds (like, um, for small children, which I am not) and while there is some effort involved you can really go to town using your imagination to satisfy whatever frozen craving you have — creamy (yogurt based), fruity (juice or puree-based) or combo (fill the molds half-way, freeze; fill up the rest, and freeze some more). Yum! In this crazy heat, even a lemon juice pop dropped into a glass of diet pepsi is a refreshing treat.

I cut bananas in half and freeze them wrapped in foil. I’m not much of an ice cream/frozen desserts person, anyway, but when it’s really hot and I have a yen for it, a frozen banana hits the spot.

chez shoes, stop harshing my buzz!

My latest ice cream addiction is Weight Watchers’ Giant Fudge Bars. For those WW points-counters out there, it’s only ONE POINT for the big fudgy bar. Of course I usually eat two in a row.

Mary T, just a little public service announcement, for those consumers who prefer to be completely informed :)

Those who wish to remain blissfully unaware, just ignore my comment!
