river cottage update
Flowers for the dining room.

Last weekend, we put our attention on another room in our new upstate cottage. This one is the dining room, that also leads out to the deck. It all started when we hung up an oil painting of a group of flowers that my Grandmother did. I loved the way the bright colors bounced off the white walls. Despite our desire to fill the house with flea market finds and/or design classics, our need for a place to sit and a table added another staple to the Ikea shopping list. We went with this white round table, the Liatorp and then added four orange Urban plastic chairs. The idea is we can use the chairs for the deck when we can upgrade the dining room to what I really want: Karim Rashid’s Butterfly chairs or maybe orange Jake chairs. Above the table, we hung a colorful, slightly rusty tole flower chandelier I bought off eBay for $50. For the windows we had a big debate. When we bought the place it came with beat up bamboo shades, which we thought needed replacing. But once we put up new ones, we realized we still didn’t like them. We spent about a half an hour of debating in the Ikea textile aisle, and almost bought these birch-patterned Anno Unni panels but ultimately thought they were too modern. In the end, we chose these Stockholm Blad curtains in bright green and now that they are hanging I couldn’t be happier. They were the perfect length — no hemming! I love the way the pattern the on the curtains mirrors the woods behinds our house. Wouldn’t it be fab we could switch them out with the seasons? After all, those leaves outside won’t be green too much longer… — Angela M.

I live near rivers and yet my jealousy over your cottage is killing me! Nice work, it’s looks insanely rad

Those curtains are awesome — love the chandelier, too.
You made a wise choice on not getting the panels. A friend has them and they’re always falling off the edge of the track and driving her crazy.

I love the curtains! I somehow have found myself owning…5 couches (see my blog for couch hysteria). So I might just sneak over and leave one on your steps.

I love the curtains! Everything you’ve chosen so far goes really well with the rest of the house.

iloveupstate.com is going to start leaving couches like neighbors leave zucchinis. Angela, keep your doors locked!
