five things we learned last week

Bright ideas we gathered from your comments.

1. Here’s an update on one of our favorite bakeries. Nosher from NYC Nosh told us that since our favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie post “Ruby et Violette was sold and closed down for what the new owners claim is a redesign, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for the place to reopen. That recipe is quite excellent though!”

2. We also got some insider scoop on the fabulous “Wal-mart” crib: Jessica wrote “The Roxanne Crib from Walmart baby Mod is actually the ‘Annabelle Crib from Million Dollar Baby, which is a line sold in many Juvenile Specialty Stores. They do this exclusive color combination for WalMart. While it is certainly not high-end furniture by quality standards, it does not carry the price tag of many of the other ‘mod’ cribs out there which are not of high quality either (read Netto Cub, etc.) It is certainly of sound quality and Million Dollar baby is JPMA certified.” See the too-good-to-be true crib here.

3. There’s more than one way to make Kugel. Marci says: “I made a yummy kugel too this week. Mine has cornflakes crumbled on top with a little cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top. After seeing yours, I want to add raisins next time. Ooh, yummy!” See the recipe here!

4. Enjoy those watermelons before they disappear for the season. Joanne from forkandbottle.com sent a link to her recipe for watermelon juice that works well frozen. She says “I’m not a fan of the Norpro pop makers though we have one - I still recall trying to get the plastic smell to go away before we used it. My son is a HUGE fan of watermelon ice pops.” See the gardening advice here.
