Quite a lot of the hyper-formal look comes from the white furniture (hard to clean) and wallpapered walls (looks like mostly easy to clean styles). The floors seem to be pretty sensible wood, tile or sisal carpet (practical!). Most of the rest stems from the absolutely pristine level of clean needed for a magazine shoot and the matchy matchy floral arrangements. Take away the flowers, add in the children, and it won't look anywhere near so formal. Most of the furniture is a style that's quite comfortable. It doesn't look very cozy or welcoming because of the stark whites and strong cool tones in the colors. The pink and white dining room feels more welcoming, since that's one of the few rooms with any warmth to the palette. If her husband likes the colors, he'll be pretty comfortable with the house.
