post off: do you decorate your house for halloween?

shelter_halloweenhouse.jpg

Browsing around on Flickr the other day, I found a ton of great photos of houses decorated for Halloween, like the one above by Riaskiff. For some, it seems as important (if not more so) than Christmas. As someone who was raised watching horror movies, I have to say I lean this way. What could be more fun than decking out your house for the pleasure of little drop-by-visitors all night long? The superintendent in our apartment building obviously feels the same. He’s done up the basement-laundry room with fake rats, cobwebs and laughing plastic skulls. What a treat! I think our river cottage is a bit too rural to get trick or treaters, but we may have to put up some spooky decor, none-the-less. What about you? Do you decorate your house for Halloween? How do you get it ready for trick-or-treaters? Send in a photo (to “letters at shelterrific dot com”) or just leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you! — Angela M.

ooh, fake rats in the laundry room? Your landlord must have some dark sense of humor!

We started decorating for Halloween when we moved into a subdivision with lots of kids. This year we are going with The Nightmare Before Christmas Theme and handing out candy canes to the trick or treaters. We are also putting out a sting of christmas lights to light the path to our side yard where we will be showing the movie on the side of our neighbors house that night. Halloween is the time that signals the holidays for us, so we have a ton of fun with it.

I have two vintage plastic Halloween signs that don’t have the lights; I just use them in the house because I think they’re cute. One is one of those “scaredy cats’” with the pumpkin on his back that says “trick” on one side and “treat” on the other. I think it’s so funny to just have it out saying “trick.” Scroll down to see one like it here:
