five things we learned last week

Bright ideas we gathered from your comments.

1. Ikea’s new Kulla amps aren’t just popular with people. As Jennie told us, the new automatic touch “on” switch is also a hit with pets. “I have 2 in white and my cats have learned how to turn them on and off with their faces.” See more about the lamp everyone is talking about here.

2. Don’t be afraid to try healthier noodles in your next lasagna dish. Marilyn says “I make my lasagna with Tinkada lasagna noodles made with brown rice. I’ve tried many brands and they are the best brown rice noodles (some don’t cook well at all) and taste almost exactly like regular pasta, and in a lasagna, you’d never taste the difference. Just add a little grapeseed oil to the water to prevent sticking.” See a healthier lasagna recipe here.

3. Crocodiles aren’t just for handbags. Ashley ashley wrote about last week’s strangely appealing croc lamp, “I live in Florida so I thnk this would be a fun accent. I love pewter and I LOVE Vivre!”

4. When making champagne cocktails, don’t use expensive bubblely. As Samantha admits: “I would never let my guests see me pour it but I use the cheap and teenager-sweet Asti champagne to make Black Velvets and THAT is the way to go. Tastes like boozy bread pudding.” See champagne recipes here.

5. Trying to save money on nursery furniture, don’t discount second-hand stuff. Says DJ “You just need to make sure that the thing is safe in terms of the space between the slats, mattress & walls, etc. Do you have a Mothers of Twins club in your area? I got some good pieces years ago from MOT members who were trying to off-load double everything, once their babies were older.” Read more about thrifty nursery decorating here.

I went to Ikea and tried out the demo lamp. While super cool-looking and chic, the dimmer function seemed faulty — way too touchy. Also, the top of the shade was pretty hot (temperature-wise). Both could be results of being a test-lamp and constantly on, but… just a heads up.
