help! i want to design my own pendant light
Hello! I found this site where I can design my own pendant ceiling light: alluminaire.com. It seems pretty affordable and fun to use. I was wondering if you had ever used them and if so what you thought. Or maybe you might recomend another site. Thank you! — Scott, Hoboken, NJ.

Hi Scott! Thanks for your question — and for turning us on to this site. It looks like you can change everything from the ceiling fixture to the hanging chord to the fabric of the shade and its trim. There’s a great selection to chose from and we love the look of it, but have to admit we have never personally used. A few magazines (Better Homes & Gardens and Blueprint) have written about them, but we’d love to hear any real life experiences from you, our readers. Have you ever used this site, Alluminare, or do you know of any other “design your own light” sites? Thanks!

I have an alluminaire drum pendant over my kitchen table, and I love it! I could not have received better customer service from them, and the quality and workmanship are great. I get tons of compliments on it.
The only thing I wish I did was that I had included a diffuser on my lamp, as they are not able to added on once they are made. My light is on a dimmer, but had I had a chance to do it again, I would have put that diffuser on there.

I ordered a dining room fixture from them about a year ago. My fixture has three cylinders in cream with dark brown trim. The shades hang at descending levels. I don’t have a camera, sorry.
The company was wonderful to deal with and the order came quickly.

Alluminaire is great — but way expensive. I bought a huge (gorgeous) drum shade at Home Goods for $16.99. I am having a local lighting place convert it for me and the additional cost is about $50.

I have a sconce from them and we are really pleased with it. We had been looking everywhere and finally decided to splurge and buy from them. Couldn’t be happier!

I purchased 2 lampshades from alluminaire. They built them incorrectly and charged me to return ship them back. I found their customer service awful. The shades are lovely, but if you live in a city I’d suggest finding a lighting place locally that will make you a custom shade. I wouldn’t deal with alluminaire again.
