five things we learned last week

Bright ideas we gathered from your comments.

1. When it comes to cat litter boxes, lids are crucial. As Sara Bee suggests: One of my close friends has three cats in her two bedroom apartment & she uses the Booda Dome litter boxes. They do a great job with odor and have a nice design to them so they fit well in almost any area; she keeps hers between the toilet & cabinet in the bathroom. The design of the Booda will rid your kitty’s paws of the litter, which is much nicer than having it stick to your bare feet! See more about cat litter boxes here.

2. You give a thumbs-up to make-your-lamp site, Alluminaire.com. As Priscilla wrote: “I ordered a dining room fixture from them about a year ago. My fixture has three cylinders in cream with dark brown trim. The shades hang at descending levels. The company was wonderful to deal with and the order came quickly. Read more about this site here.

3. You love the idea of cooking with the classics, recipes from cookbooks gone by. Lee S. suggests: “Have you tried Spinach Madeleine? It is in Bell’s Best … 1st Edition printed 1981. Which is a 1970’s kind of cookbook. It makes a great casserole and a great dip at a party. It is made with Pepper Jack cheese so it is spicy.” Read more about vintage cookbooks here.

4. Looking for flannel sheets to keep you cozy? Kristi says: “Target always has the cutest flannel sheets. They just make me want to jump in bed with hot coco and a book. See our bedding find of the week.

5. What to do with holiday leftovers? You have a ton of ideas, but first: Make soup! Jill A. writes: “Stock, of course the next day. It freezes so well and is always handy. Last night I made a gravy out of leftover schmaltz (from Rosh Hashonah chicken soup) and onions and chicken stock, and diced up the turkey and let it simmer in that until heated. That over leftover mashed potatoes was perfect for the cold weather we had last night. Also, took the carrots and heated them in a saucepan with a tablespoon of butter and a splash of balsamic vinegar.” See more leftover ideas here.

  1. Jessie Mae Says:

Sadly, my little orange cat refused to use his Booda Dome with the lid on, and was shaky on using it with the lid off. So this weekend it was back to normal rectangular lidless box, which so far he seems to be liking much better. And really, if it makes him happy, it makes me happy, because I’d rather sweep up litter than be constantly mopping cat urine off the floor.
