holiday mail-order: schtock up on schnecken!

shelter_scheken.jpg

In my hometown of Cincinnati, the Christmas season meant lines of people outside the old Virginia Bakery to snap up a limited-batch seasonal treat: Schnecken. Simply put, it’s the butteriest, sweetest, densest treat you can find. The recipe was closely guarded, but when Virginia Bakery’s owners decided to retire a few years back, they put it the in the care of another venerable local bakery, Busken. Now Busken Bakery not only makes Original Cincinnati Schnecken a little more available locally, you can order some online for some Ohio-Germanic holiday feasting of your own. There’s even a “Schnecken Blog” where readers can tell their stories. What can I say? Cincinnatians take their baked goods seriously. — Mary T.

    mmm, schnecken!

Schnecken is fairly easy to make (the joy of cooking has a recipe for snail rolls in it.)

Yeah, I thought about adding in a recipe but who am I kidding — if I ain’t eating Cincinnati Schnecken, I ain’t eating Schnecken!
