1. Who needs candles? You have some unique ways to get rid of yucky household smells. As Hannah suggests: “The best thing to do is boil a pot of water on the stove with some lemon or orange slices, some cinnamon sticks, whole coves, ginger, or whatever else smells good. The steam will make your whole house smell amazing, even after, say, frying chicken for 20 people, or burning a salmon filet.” See more great suggestions.
2. The energy-saving fluorescent bulbs may be good for the environment, but they leave us a little cold, design-wise. As Alley puts it: “We’ve replaced our living room lamps with them. I wasn’t crazy about the light color at first, and I’m only marginally more used to it now. We’re replacing as others burn out, but I’m not sure I want to do so in our bedroom; I really prefer the warmer light of an incandescent bulb. See all your thoughts here.
3. Even though the Golden Globes were cancelled, you still have movies on your mind. The comments on our movie decor post continue to grow, with this latest one from Colleen. “I always watch DVD featurettes hoping for something about the sets. I want… Something’s Gotta Give for my beach house. The Breakup for my city condo. The Holiday for my English cottage. Practical Magic for my sprawling victorian. Father of the Bride to raise my family (oh, the nursery in Father of the Bride 2!!!!) To put a few out there that haven’t been mention yet (perhaps with reason!): Michael Douglas’s upstate home in Fatal Attaction (always preferred it to Glen Close’s apartment), Drew Barrymore’s house in Scream, the craftsman-style house on Numb3rs, the craftsman-style house in Zathura, Hope and Michael’s house on Thirtysomething, and hello! 4. Many of us would move into a Sears Kit house in a heartbeat. Pencils Says: “My husband is really interested in Sears kit houses. I don’t know if there are any in our area of Long Island, but we’re going to be looking for a house this year, and if we find one, he’s going to want it!” See more about these American classics here.
5. Working from home is wonderful, but it has it’s ups and downs. As Meesha explains sometimes “I also struggle with motivation. It’s nice to be judged by what I produce rather than how long I’m in my chair, but sometimes I can’t let myself stop when I’ve accomplished enough for the day. So I wind up working way long hours or procrastinating on starting projects so that I spend a full day at my desk.” Weigh in on conversation here.
