I’m a fan of stealing this idea, because we already stole it! There was a lovely home in our old neighborhood with one of those enormous, drool-worthy wraparound porches. But what really caught our eye was the red glow from the oh-so-cool vintage exit light that they’d repurposed as a porch light. We liked it so much, we bought our own on eBay (it was salvaged from an old movie theater), moved it all the way across the country, and now, over a year later, have finally installed it on our own front porch. (Which needs painting.) There always seem to be a few cool exit signs available online. Of course, a red light is only workable in areas where safety isn’t as much of a concern (our house is set up so that you enter through the back door, not the front), and obviously you don’t want to hang it somewhere that would confuse people in an emergency! –Mary T.
