pretty crafty: pincushions by schmaltzy craftsy

These Schmaltzy Craftsy pincushions really caught my eye, appropriately enough. Jen Segrest’s designs, many of which are featured in the recent book Pretty Little Pincushions, include everything from her hilarious “Creepy Eye” bottlecap pincushions to sweet cherry blossom and “Thoroughly Girly Tomato” designs.

Her attention to detail is so great and her designs are so incredible, I want a bunch of them, even though I barely sew. You can admire them on Jen’s Flickr page, too. Or, of course, purchase a few of your own at her Etsy store. –Mary T.
P.S. If Jen’s name sounds familiar, perhaps you’ve met her at one of her many other design-related endeavors: Very Big Design, Pixeldecor, Medieval Beads and OHIKEA.

Oh my god!!! LOVE these…. And I’m planning on taking a sewing class soon, so I’ll need a pincushion! I think the eyeball must be mine….

I’m so glad others like them — I seriously stop by her Etsy store occasionally just to stare at them! : ) Guess I better buy some!!

The eye looks neat but it would be disconcerting to stick a pin in it.

I love the cherry blossoms with all my heart. $40 - oof! But I know there’s so much talent in there. I think I might buy one as a gift even though it will hurt me to give it away!

I know the prices are oofing. Sorry, but that cheery blossom one is BIG! and there is a ton of hand work in cutting the tree branches and laying them out and sewing it down. It’s also a MASSIVE pincushion, like 7″ across. ones of that size make GREAT places to prop your glasses with the arms out.

i do have it in a bottlecap size for under $15, and can make it a smaller ‘donut’ size as well. just ask!

I was impressed with the eyeball designs (creepy and funny, cross my heart and hope to die), but I’m glad I looked at the shop. WOW, so many cute designs, at a variety of price points. I can appreciate why certain pieces cost more than others, but that shouldn’t limit anyone from finding one to love at a price they can feel comfortable with. Also, they are pincushions but they are not just pincushions. What’s so fantastic about your old $3 tomato?
