living-room art update, plus tips for saving time

Even after getting all of your great advice about what to hang above my couch (I especially liked design snob’s recommendation of going for the “big gesture”), I wasn’t able to find a print I love. Usually I’d keep scouring fabric stores, but this time I just used what I already have—the fabric scrap and wrapping paper shown above. It’s dorky, but I was inspired by a time-management article in the Times. It linked to a list of tips that pointed out the dangers of trying to do every last activity perfectly. So I’m wondering: Are you a perfectionist about decorating? And, while I’m at it, do you have any good time-saving tips? —Bunny W.

I’m currently on my fifth bedroom paint color in less than 4 years and week 5 of building the perfect headboard. Thankfully the rest of the house turned out perfectly on the first try otherwise I’d still be living out of boxes!!

Oh my gosh, YES. So much so that I usually just don’t decorate, because I won’t do it until I can get it just right. On the one hand, this is better than changing my mind and redoing things over and over. On the other, I end up living in a non-decorated space for however long it takes for me to decide what I’m doing and how I’m doing it. (sigh)

Every place my mother and I ever lived in until recently didn’t get updated or decorated until we were getting ready to put it on the market. Apple wallpaper (HIDEOUS!) from previous owners stayed up for 5 years until she was ready to sell. My problem is that there are so many decorating options that I LOVE LOVE LOVE that I can’t narrow it down to one and commit to it. The new problem is that my husband is the most conservative minamilist imaginable, so the quirky things I like are out the door. I love him lots and he is wonderful in every other way, so I gotta give on that one. He did let me paint the bump out around the fireplace a really cool blue-gray, and he loves it to, so there is hope on both counts!

My Mom is buying a new house. When we went and looked at it (the house is a new build) I said it is ready move into. She said oh no, it has to have color over these white walls! So I guess we will all be painting first before we move her in. She redoes paint color in her house about every 18 months. Its a hoot, you never know what you will be walking into~
