bedroom re-do, part one: in-laws in a hurry

Remember the clanky bed? Well, it’s long gone. After moving to a new house and sleeping with the mattress on the floor for three months, we finally got the Delaney Bed by Amisco you see here from Kasala. Relationships are built on compromise, and so was this decision. The bed is maybe a tiny bit “manlier” than I might have chosen, but it was the simplest, sturdiest (No squeaks at all to report!) bed we could find for less than $1,000, and we liked the fact that we could choose the colors. We went with a padded vinyl headboard both for easy cleaning (you can’t even imagine the places our mastiff’s drool ends up when he shakes his head) and for comfort.
The room is the result of a put-it-together-in-one-night extravaganza of haste. My in-laws arrive for a visit tonight, and we realized belatedly that it would be easier to give them our bedroom while we sleep in my office/guest room. That meant quickly pressing a few things into service: the bedside lights were from our basement “rec room” (more like a wreck room right now), the tables themselves are vintage TV trays, and my husband hurriedly hung all the art that I’d been dithering over. Perfect? Not at all — we’ll need to tackle the odd window sizes (there’s nowhere else the bed will work) rearrange the art a bit, replace the crappy metal blinds that came with the house, we want to get a new comforter, and we most definitely will do something about that fabulous vintage ’70s fan. But for one night’s work? Not bad at all! –Mary T.
