strangely appealing (or not): what brad pitt bought at art basel

Brad Pitt’s in the news for purchases he made at Switzerland’s Art Basel contemporary art fair. Reportedly, he paid roughly $293,000 for a table by Dutch designer Jeroen Verhoeven, which is made from a solid block of Carrara marble. He also purchased a Silver Sky aluminum rug by Hechizoo and a foam and fiberglass “Family Lamp” from Atelier van Lieshout (Note: images on site not safe for work) among other reported purchases. Love it? Hate it? That’s okay — we have a soft spot for him anyway.

Love him, do not like his taste in furnishings! The family lamp is slightly cute.
so, sorry, but that’s not furniture i could live with — altho, given how many houses those folks have, maybe that’s not a criteria. maybe buying a $300k coffee table is like buying a flashy pair of heels that you put in your closet and never wear, or impulse buying double scoops of ice cream. maybe he was having an “I am Brad and I do have taste” moment.
I think the table is awesome! It is all about negative space. I would actually prefer it if it were white plastic rather than marble.
I like the idea of a simple plastic posing/pretending to be monumental and marble-like, and actually being an “un-table” (because of the use of negative space). If it were plastic, I’d think it genius. As is, I think its over priced. :)
[...] If you love fantasy, and you consider Carrie’s little splurge a drop in the bucket compared to Brad Pitt’s $293,000 designer coffee table, then stop here. Otherwise, for more on the $300 pillow and my weariness at the show’s relentless [...]
He’s going to take alot of slack for this one, and he deserves it! Is he hanging out with some stuck-up full of themselves interior designers or what? A table over 200K??? For god’s sake, man, get ahold of them! PLUS he has to ship that thing by container home to CA.!! How much is THAT going to cost? Furthermore, hasn’t everyone in the world had that conversation where you say “You know, even if I was rich, I wouldn’t spend $X.XX on a blankety-blank.”? Apparently not Mr. Pitt. Maybe I can sell him this nice bridge I know of….
